Past Isle of Man president awarded CGF Order of Merit

Wed, 04 Apr 2018

Juliet Holt, who was President of the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association for more than 10 years, has been awarded the Commonwealth Games Federation Order of Merit.

The Award, which recognises distinguished services rendered to the Commonwealth Games movement, was presented to Juliet in Australia, ahead of the 2018 Gold Coast Games, which run from 4-15 April and feature a 33-strong team plus coaches and team officials.

Juliet was nominated in recognition of her contribution as Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association President from 2007 to 2017. During her tenure the Association evolved to be the rigorously professional and accountable organisation that modern sport demands, and works hard to be aligned with and supported by the Island’s commercial and government sectors, as well as local sports organisations.

Prior to her years as President, Juliet was Vice President for 12 months, playing a key role in sending Isle of Man teams to Commonwealth Games in Pune, Delhi, Glasgow, Samoa and the Bahamas, as well as the home Commonwealth Youth Games in 2011. In addition, from the close of the Games in Glasgow in 2014, Juliet spearheaded getting the team to Australia.

Juliet, an enthusiastic sportsperson herself competing in small-bore rifle shooting, also brought marketing expertise to the Association, which was invaluable in helping raise much-needed funds.

Juliet said: ‘It is a great honour to be awarded the Commonwealth Games Federation Order of Merit and even more so to be invited to receive it in Gold Coast. As with all awards the Order of Merit is given to one person but there is always a team in the background and I would like to thank all those who have worked so hard to support me.

‘My 12 years involvement with the Commonwealth Games Association of the Isle of Man has been so rewarding, if challenging at times. The support of the Manx people has been exceptional, allowing our talented athletes to compete for their own country, under their national flag. It has been a privilege to have been on that journey with them.

‘I have loved being part of the CGA and although I have stepped down as President I am still very much involved with Team Isle of Man. I  am sure the whole Island will join with me in wishing them good luck as they compete at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.’

Basil Bielich, current Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association President, added: ‘During her 10 years as President, Juliet did so much for Team Isle of Man and has created a legacy to be really proud of. It’s great to see that being recognised internationally by the Federation.

‘Juliet fought hard to get such a strong team to this year’s Games and the success we will see over the coming weeks will be a testament to the groundwork she laid.’
