Lezayre Commissioners are urging residents with an interest in politics to join the board at the next local election.

It follows a failed by-election in the area – only one person came forward but without the correct paperwork.

Chair Julian Teare believes the authority needs people from all walks of life to make the ‘best’ decisions for residents.

He says the board needs more input to survive.

In a statement the local authority said:

“We recently sought a new commissioner to join the team and were really disappointed that we were not able to get anyone in place so will be seeking a new commissioner again early next year to get involved in the local community and help to really make a difference in Lezayre.

The commissioners aim to make sure that local services are delivered efficiently and cost-effectively and also consider new projects that could improve life in the north of the Island. An example of what they get involved in is the issue of the proposed Ramsey Town boundary extension.

Anyone reading this and thinking they do not have the right skills to contribute should think again. A Board of Commissioners needs members from all walks of life to make good democratic decisions that are best for the people of Lezayre.

If local authorities are to survive they need more input from local people.

And it really isn’t time-consuming. The commissioners generally meet one evening a month to discuss ongoing issues in the parish and also have the opportunity to sit on collaborative boards and committees with commissioners from other parishes.

“Members of the public are invited to sit in on all their public meetings so anyone who might be interested in becoming a commissioner can come along and see what goes on.”

The next Commissioner’s meeting is on December 7 at 7pm at Sulby Community Hall.
