Assisted Dying Bill Passes Second Reading

Tue, 31 Oct 2023

A law to legalise 'assisted dying' in the Isle of Man has moved a step closer this evening.

A private members bill introduced by Dr Alex Allinson MHK has passed its second reading in the House of Keys after a debate that lasted for over 6 hours.

17 MHK's voted for the bill, with 7 voting against.

The Bill was opposed by the Island's Chief Minister Alfred Cannan, but as this was not a Government Bill, all Members had a free vote.

The votes were as follows:

FOR - David Ashford, Ann Corlett, Clare Barber, Daphne Caine, Rob Callister, Tim Crookall, Dr Alex Allinson, Dr Michelle Haywood, Lawrie Hooper, Tim Johnston, Sarah Maltby, Joney Faragher, Stu Peters, Jane Poole-Wilson, Juan Watterson, Chis Thomas, John Wannenburgh.

AGAINST - Alfred Cannan, Claire Christian, Tim Glover, Jason Moorhouse, Julie Edge, Kate Lord-Brennan and Andrew Smith.

The House of Keys will next scrutinse the Bill in detail by debating and voting on each clause.

Once it has completed its passage through the Keys, the Bill will go to the Legislative Council for consideration.
