'Talking in the Dark' podcast hopes to help remove the stigma around all disabilities

Wed, 18 Oct 2023

Earlier today (October 18) Energy FM reporter Charlie Morrey spoke to up and coming podcaster Evie Roberts:

To say Evie is your average podcast host is doing her a massive injustice. Not only has she an exceptionally engaging voice, she’s a talented musician and plays the flute for the Manx Youth Orchestra along with being a budding horse rider with Riding for the Disabled (RDA).

RDA? Well, Evie is blind. The fourteen year old who attends Ballakermeen High School has a genetic condition called bilateral anopthalmia which has meant that she has been blind since birth, during the interview Evie explains in her own humorous way what the condition is:

“I have the eye socket, but when it came to developing the actual eye and optic nerve my body went no not going to do that, can’t be bothered. So instead I wear prosthetic eyes.”

Evie hopes that the podcast helps remove the stigma around all disabilities, she told me that as a blind person she finds that people can sometimes be scared to talk to her for fear of saying or doing the wrong thing.

During our chat, Evie said it was her drama teacher Ste Craige who had come up with the idea of a podcast. Ste has played an integral part supporting Evie with the podcast, and helped the youngster on her way, to what I for one do not doubt, a path of stardom.

Although she was a bit apprehensive at first of doing the podcasts, she really needn’t of worried as within only six months of ‘Talking in the Dark’ she has already had Fearne Cotton and Chris McCausland on as guests; both of which are well established TV personalities.

She also let on that her dream guest would be Taylor Swift, now as fellow ‘Swiftie’ I can completely get on board with this… so, if anyone has any grand ideas or wants to help Evie have a chat with her hero, or just be the envy of all those who got tickets to the Era’s tour (getting her on your podcast would be much better anyway) – feel free to shout up and attempt to make it happen.
