Libraries are a 'vital' community space for youngsters

Fri, 06 Oct 2023

Libraries are a ‘vital’ service for children on the Isle of Man.

That’s the view of the librarian from the Henry Bloom Noble Library who says youngsters who are encouraged to read at a young age often perform better at school.

Jan McCartney says the facility is for ‘everyone’ in the community.

We’ll hear from her in a moment but first, Waterstones Children’s Laureate Joseph Coelho agrees saying that "reading is a wonderful thing to do".

He added: "It broadens horizons, you know, you can lose yourself in a book, but you can also find out about the world on your doorstep and beyond. So I think it’s vital that we encourage children to read and to become lifelong readers and learners. Libraries are the hubs of communities, cross generational."

The library is free for anyone to join, but for residents who can’t travel to Douglas, they can become a member online and access books online.
