Manx War Veteran's grandson is the stonemason involved in maintenance of War Memorial

Fri, 25 Aug 2023

Nicholas Duff the grandson of Manx War Veteran, Hector Duff, is the stonemason that is carrying out the re-grouting of the Douglas War Memorial.

Hector Duff passed away in 2020 at the age of 101. He was best known for being the Island's only remaining Normandy veteran, and had not only survived the landings, but also campaigns in Italy and North Africa.

Douglas Council has been thanked after it arranged for the inscriptions of the names of the deceased to be re-grouted by Nicholas Duff, along with maintenance of the stonework and a general ‘tidy-up’ of the site.

A scheduled maintenance programme is “essential to preserve a memorial of national significance which acts as a fitting tribute to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice”, says the local authority.

Chair of the Committee, Speaker of the House of Keys, Juan Watterson, said: “It’s fantastic to know just how many people care about our war memorials and are willing to look out for them.

“I'd like to express my thanks to the stonemason and Douglas Council for the care and attention being shown to this very visible memorial which celebrates its centenary on May 29th next year.”
