Problems with 'joyriders' entering fields without permission

Fri, 28 Jul 2023

Several farms in the south of the island have been targeted by "joyriders". The farms in Grenaby have had an issue with individuals entering land without permission and driving round their grass crops.

The fields of grass are being grown for a silage crop along being grazing fields for livestock. The silage that is grown from these fields will be used to feed livestock during the winter. Damage to these crops will affect the yields, meaning less fodder for the animals and increasing costs to the farmer.

The individuals in question have also been leaving gates on the farm open, which can put animals lives at risk if they escape and get out on to the road.

There is a clear message from the farming community that “if you see an empty field, it doesn’t mean it isn’t being used”.

The farmers that have had this happen on their land have filed a police report and are calling on the public to report to the police if “joyriders” are seen within the Grenaby area.
