Sure to implement new innovative technology for TT

Mon, 08 May 2023

With the 2023 Isle of Man TT fast approaching, Sure, the Official Telecommunications Partner, is excited to yet again be powering the races with cutting-edge technology delivering the best fan and rider experience possible.

This year Sure will be supporting the implementation of new innovative technology for the races which includes additional safety measures to protect riders.

Each rider will have a bespoke GPS on their bike, an initiative developed by the organisers and powered by Sure 4G SIMs, delivering real-time data from any point around the TT course. The GPS system monitors riders and key support vehicles involved with the organisation of TT and feeds locations and speed data back to race control. This was trialled on a small number of bikes in 2022 and Sure is continuing to support this initiative, which is now mandatory for participants, for the 2023 TT.

Sure also provides the connectivity for another event initiative: powering the connectivity for the digital flag warning system through its 4G SIM services, also introduced at the 2022 TT around the Mountain Course. This year, the number of computerised red flags has increased to 39. The flags provide a failsafe system for race control to be able to call a halt to the races at the push of a button, as well as being able to provide other live race updates to competitors.

The 2023 event will again be broadcast live with Sure continuing to deliver its resilient connectivity services, following the success of the first-ever live broadcast of the Isle of Man TT in 2022. Allowing those around the course to watch all the live action on their smart phones, and people at home locally and globally to tune in, so no one misses out on the world-famous event.

Sure Isle of Man Chief Executive Mike Phillips said: “Sure have been providing cutting-edge technology to the TT for 17 years, and this year we are proud to expand our service and solution offering. The new safety initiatives being permanently introduced this year will help protect the welfare of all the riders.

“Throughout our partnership with the TT, we have increased our involvement every year, technology and connectivity has become more important not only to the event, but also the spectators and fans. It has allowed more people to connect to the races; the TT is a global sensation, we’re glad to be a part of the journey to bring it to screens around the world. It’s truly been an exciting 17 years and we look forward to continuing our partnership for many years to come.”

Sophie Lowney, TT & Motorsport Development Manager, said: “The safety of the riders is paramount to us, and Sure’s commitment to powering these safety measures as the Official Telecommunications Partner, through their ultrafast network helps make the event safer, as well as more accessible for everyone involved.”

The Isle of Man TT runs from 29 May to 10 June 2023.
