Biosecurity measures introduced on Calf of Man due to bird flu

Wed, 27 Jul 2022

A series of measures of been introduced on the Calf of Man after several birds on the Isle of Man tested positive for bird flu.

Manx National Heritage has increased biosecurity controls with immediate effect.

The restrictions include the closure of Cow Harbour, east coast track on the Calf of Man and the suspension of all access to seabird colonies.

Disinfection mats will be installed at South Harbour and The Dock.

Shaun Murphy, Manx National Heritage Properties Manager for Land Use and Sustainability said: “The decision to implement increased biosecurity measures on the Calf of Man, including the suspension of vital monitoring activities is not without cost, with bird ringing providing a powerful conservation tool to understand the drivers to change in bird populations and facilitating targeted conservation practice."
