Footballer flying the Manx flag at 2021 Amputee Euros

A talented Island footballer will play in the 13-man England squad for the 2021 Amputee Euros which kick off in Poland this week.

20-year-old amputee Sean Jackson headed out to Krakow this week ready for the tournament which runs until 19th September, following a high intensity five-day training camp at Reaseheath College, Nantwich, which featured tactical and physical sessions led by Head Coach Owen Coyle jnr and his team of coaches. The team play their first group match against Greece yesterday, followed by a match against France on 15th September before the knockout rounds begin.

Jackson, the 2018 Isle of Man Disability Sportsperson of the Year, is currently in the second year of a Football Coaching and Management degree at Etihad Campus University in Manchester. He previously played locally for Laxey, Marown and St Georges. Restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic meant a frustrating 12 months for the player who was only able to return to training with the Manchester City’s ‘City in the Community’ amputee squad in mid-May.

Sean explained: ‘After all the disruption it’s really exciting, after over two years of preparation and training, to be at the tournament. International amputee football is run as a charity with players and coaches self-funding, so sponsorship is vital to the squad’s progression.’
