Half a million queen scallops moved to a new home

Mon, 07 Dec 2020

More than half a million queenies have been moved to a new place on the seabed to allow for the laying of an underwater cable.

Dublin-based company Celtix Connect has been authorised to land two branches of a marine fibre optic cable at Port Erin and Port Grenaugh in the coming months.

A survey found high numbers of Queen Scallops along the route near Port Erin in an area that isn’t often fished.

The Isle of Man Government says it worked with scientists and local fisherman on the relocation project.

Manx fishing boat Coral Strand caught 19 tonnes of the shellfish and moved them to a different 7.5km stretch of the seafloor.
