Teacher's union announce date for 'action short of strike action'

Thu, 13 Feb 2020

Teachers who are part of the NASUWT will stage 'action short of strike action' on Monday 24th February.

It's happening due to the Union’s dispute with the Isle of Man Government over pay, pensions and conditions of service.

NASWUT said the action taken will not disrupt pupils’ learning.

Teachers will continue to prepare for their timetabled lessons, mark and assess pupils’ work and support extra-curricular activities which are part of a recognised ongoing qualification, where students have already paid to enter a competition or where a school trip for which parents have already paid has been organised.

Acting General Secretary Ms Chris Keates said: 'Since 2010, teachers and school leaders have year after year faced the erosion of their pay, amounting to real-terms pay cuts of a third. This is jeopardising the recruitment and retention of teachers.

'It also comes at a time when teachers’ workload is continuing to rise and changes are being proposed to pensions which would substantially worsen the arrangements for teachers.

'Action would not be necessary if ministers had agreed to our numerous requests to sit down and genuinely engage with us to resolve the matters under dispute. We hope parents will join with us in pressing the Government to urgently address the concerns of teachers and school leaders.'
