Changes made to rules on importation of horses to Island

Wed, 12 Feb 2020

Rules on the importation of horses to the Island have changed.

The IOM Government said changes include horses fully vaccinated against equine influenza do not need to be isolated on arrival, and horses which are not fully vaccinated still need to be isolated for 14 days on arrival.

Last year, restrictions were introduced after an outbreak of the virus in the UK, but the number of cases has greatly decreased since then and no cases have been recorded here.

IOM Government said the virus is not markedly different from human flu and infected horses suffer from coughing and runny noses and feel run-down.

Although rarely life-threatening, it is highly contagious.

Anyone with a query regarding their animal’s vaccination status is asked to contact their vet.
