OCSIA and Police warning residents of Amazon scam

Wed, 12 Feb 2020

The Office of Cyber-Security and Information Assurance and IOM Constabulary are warning residents of a scam targeting Amazon customers.

Both said they have been made aware of several residents receiving automated calls from persons claiming to be from the online retailer, Amazon, requesting them to ‘press 1’ to cancel Amazon Prime.

Pressing 1 connects the person to a bogus Amazon agent, who will attempt to coerce the individual into giving remote access to their laptop/desktop PC and/or mobile devices.

They will then continue to attempt to get the individual to access their online or mobile banking whilst they are in control of the device.

Anyone who has received a call of this nature is asked to immediately report this to their bank who will take measures to protect their accounts.

OCSIA is asking residents affected by this scam to report it using the form on their webpage at www.gov.im/cybersecurity
