Safer Internet Day highlighted at event in Douglas

Tue, 11 Feb 2020

An event will be held in Douglas today to mark the national Safer Internet Day.

Experts in all things technical will be available to talk to members of the public about spotting online scams, on staying safe online, device security, passwords, reducing the risk of fraud and keeping children and young people safe.

There will be the opportunity to bring your device with you for a free security health check from both Sure and Manx Telecom.

The free drop-in sessions at the Sea Terminal Welcome Centre are between 10:30 am - 12:30 pm, and again from 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm.

Safer Internet Day was launched 15 years ago by the joint Insafe/INHOPE network, with the support of the European Commission, to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology, and has grown to be celebrated in over 150 countries across the globe.

The Isle of Man Government’s commitment to Safer Internet Day is part of a broader programme of work on digital inclusion, which sees the Isle of Man Government leading the British Irish Council (BIC) Digital Inclusion Work Sector.

As part of this work, the BIC Digital Inclusion Work Sector will publish a series of infographics in support of digital inclusion, the first of which will be launched on Safer Internet Day.

Minister for Policy and Reform and Ministerial Chair of the British-Irish Council Digital Inclusion Work Sector, Chris Thomas MHK, said: 'We are delighted to be able to offer these invaluable free online safety sessions to the public in order to build confidence in getting the most out of the online experience in a secure and informed way.'
