Fire crews called to Santon log burning incident

Fire crews from Douglas and Castletown have responded to a wood-burning stove fire in Santon.

 

At 11 pm yesterday, fire engines from Douglas Station and a major pumping appliance from Castletown and Malew Station were mobilised to reports of a structure fire at a property in Harbour Road, Santon.

 

Crews entered the property with smoke issuing from the ground floor and quickly discovered wooden logs that had caught fire after being stored too close to a wood-burning stove.

 

They then ventilated the property using a positive pressure fan.

 

IOMFRS are reminding the public that wood-burning stoves are increasingly popular and the following advice regarding them should be adhered to:

 

• Always ensure a stove is fitted and maintained by a competent person.
•  Stoves should be cleaned regularly to prevent a build-up of tars and soot which could result in fires in the flue.
• Areas surrounding the stoves should be kept clear and any fuels stored well away from the immediate area.
• Always ensure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are fitted and tested each week to ensure they are working.
