Police confirm Post Office HQ evacuated due to suspicious package

Wed, 22 Jan 2020

Police have confirmed an evacuation which took place in IOM Post Office Headquarters earlier today was due to a suspicious package.

At around 8:45 am officers were called to the Sorting Office at Spring Valley Industrial Estate in Douglas after it was found by Post Office staff.

Under further investigation by attending police officers, a decision was made to evacuate the premises and those nearby, whilst the package was being examined.

Police said that the Sorting Office remains closed and will remain so until a specialist support unit from the UK will arrive to safely dispose of the package.

Personnel from the adjacent premises to the sorting office are no longer evacuated and have been allowed to return.

In a statement, the Force said: 'We would like to reassure the public that the appropriate procedures for incidents of this nature are being followed and the safety of the employees of the Isle of Man Post Sorting Office and the general public remains our priority.'

No further information will be released at this stage.
