Ramsey RNLI assist UK crews with yacht rescue

Mon, 30 Dec 2019

RNLI crews from Ramsey were called to assist other branches of RNLI to locate a yacht in trouble.

At 5.15pm on Friday 27th December the 'Ruby Clery' was launched to aid a vessel, which was stranded due to poor visibility and not having functional navigational equipment.

Under the command of Coxswain Mark Kenyon, crews from Ramsey assisted other assets in the search for the yacht - Workington RNLI Lifeboat, Kircudbright RNLI Lifeboat, Kircudbright Coastguard and Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 199.

The 24ft yacht, whose single crew member was uninjured, was located by Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 199 at 5.48pm 8 miles South East of Whithorn, Scotland.

The vessel was taken under tow by Workington RNLI shortly afterwards.

Ramsey RNLI was stood down at 5.56pm and the yacht was eventually towed to Kircudbright.

A spokesman for Ramsey RNLI said: 'It is important to plan and be fully prepared when embarking on a passage. The vessel must be sea worthy and have working navigation and communications equipment on board and more importantly, know how to use them.

'It is a good idea to inform someone ashore of your passage plans, providing details of departure and estimated time of arrival. The earlier the alarm can be raised the earlier assistance can be provided.'
