School pupils to present Syrian refugee petition to Tynwald

Mon, 25 Nov 2019

Ballakermeen High School students will be presenting a petition to Tynwald this afternoon for a Select Committee to be established.

Pupils will present 'That Tynwald takes note of the Public Petition of Joseph Locke, Alex Kissack and others relating to Syrian Refugees, and agrees to establish a Select Committee of three Members to investigate the feasibility of the Isle of Man taking in Syrian refugees,' outside the Tynwald Building in Douglas from 12:15pm.

Daphne Caine MHK will table a motion to the December sitting of Tynwald based on the petition.

She asked Chief Minister Howard Quayle MHK last year to reconsider the Island's stance on allowing Syrian refugees to move here, but nothing has changed - however Mr Quayle said the Island had donated £1.5m towards humanitarian aid since the Syrian conflict started.
