Post Office Parcel Hall extension underway

Fri, 08 Nov 2019

Work to build an extension to the existing Parcel Hall at Isle of Man Post Office’s headquarters is underway.

The extension will primarily see the roof area increased to cover the entire loading area.

It's being done to enable postal staff to load their vehicles under cover, while work will also include the over cladding of the existing roof with an insulated material and relocation of the office to improve the work flow generating efficiencies, and improved staff facilities.

While letter volumes are in decline, parcel volumes are on the increase and IOMPO said tey have seen a growth in parcel volumes from its current partners of 14% per annum in recent years.

Not only is the number of parcels increasing, but the volumetric size of items is too, necessitating the need for extra space.

With Christmas on the way, the work is due to completed ahead of the peak period for the postal industry which starts from mid-November.

Julie Edge MHK, Chairman of IOMPO said: 'The extension will provide many benefits for the business, it will enhance the working environment for our Parcel Hall staff, who often have to load their vans in inclement conditions, as well as ensuring parcels are protected from the weather, to ensure they are delivered to our valued customers in excellent condition.

'The extension forms part of our five-year strategic business case to protect our core business and grow profitably.'
