Students educated about homelessness

Over 2,000 children from the Island’s schools have engaged with an education programme which explains the reality of homelessness.

Local charity Housing Matters launched their Peer Education Programme in 2017 with the support of Dandara.

The programme involves sessions held in primary and secondary schools, as well as youth clubs, to educate pupils important facts about homelessness.

Early indications suggest its Peer Education Programme is showing a 21 per cent reduction in under 21s contacting the charity during 2018/19, compared to the previous 12 months.

Over the past year, Housing Matters has delivered various sessions Island wide, including a presentation to all year 10 students at Ballakermeen High School, a presentation to 180 sixth form students at St Ninian’s High School, an informal question and answer session with members of Peel Youth Club and an innovative project, spread over a fortnight, with pupils at King William’s College.
