Social media campaign group says Gov 'too slow' prioritising mental health care

Tue, 17 Sep 2019

A local social media campaign group say Government needs to do more to help people who suffer from mental health issues, which could eventually lead to serious situations for them.

The Facebook group, called 'Highlighting the plight of Homelessness, Poverty and Inequality on the IOM', recently posted their views on Manx Labour Party member David Cretney MLC's comments about the Manannan Court review.

In a statement, Mr Cretney said that the MLP is calling upon the Government to provide the continued funding required to ensure mental health services are fit for purpose.

A member of the social media group told Energy FM News: 'It’s great that Mr Cretney, MLC, cares. It’s great that he is speaking out and it’s great that people are recognising more needs to be done. But, not enough is being done with any urgency, it’s too little, too slowly!

We now have a mental health professional attending the police station when needed, why do we not have a mental health professional in all GP practices when this is usually the first point of call for most people who recognise they are struggling? Why are we not better educating our young children in schools about mental health?

Our government and MHK’s need to stop treating mental health as the poor cousin of health and recognise that it is as important, if not more important in many ways than physical health?!'
