Manx Blind Welfare Society has launched Vision Awareness Week 2019 with a fundraising walk.
Around 400 people took part in the 'Coast to Coast' walk yesterday, trekking 12 miles from Douglas to Peel.
The charity are holding numerous events throughout the week, including an exhibition today and tomorrow at the MBWS headquarters in Onchan, and 'Bright for Sight' Friday 13 September.
Island residents and local businesses are encouraged to get involved with the special day by wearing something bright, decorating the workplace in bright colours or bringing in some tasty, colourful treats.
The annual campaign is held to raise awareness of the Society, the importance of good eye health and the challenges faced by those with visual impairments.
This year it will take on the theme of ‘Making the Island Accessible’, with a different focus every day on how simple changes can be made in public places to help blind and visually impaired people in our community.
A coffee morning will be taking place on Friday at MBWS headquarters in Corrin Court, Onchan, where everyone is welcome to come along wearing their brightest clothes and enjoy some tea, coffee, biscuits and friendly chat. Stalls will also be open offering a selection of home-baked goods.
Manx Blind Welfare Society Volunteers Coordinator & Events Organiser Debbie Thomson said: ‘We hope this week is an eye-opener and helps to spread awareness of the big impact that small adjustments can make. We’ve been busy reaching out to the local community and helping people understand how they can support our visually impaired community, both in the workplace and elsewhere. More will be revealed over the coming days on how we can work together to make public places more accessible, keep your eyes peeled!’
