Riding club responds to horse strangles reports in Glen Maye

Thu, 05 Sep 2019

A local riding club has responded to reports of horse strangles in Glen Maye via social media.

Kennaa Riding club in St Johns have said that as a precaution the club has decided to cancel this weekend's dressage and next weekend's arena event.

They have said that all tickets for these events will be refunded and have made the decision following biosecurity best practice to decrease the risk of horses becoming infected.

Horse strangles is also known as equine distemper, which is a contagious infection which makes swallowing and breathing uncomfortable.

It's believed that a horse in Glen Maye caught the infection when off-Island, but wasn't obvious until two months after the horse came home.
