A heritage group wants to preserve the remnants of a former World War Two military base at the entrance to Janet’s Corner in Castletown.

 

HMS Urley was built in 1944, and covered the whole area now occupied by the estate and Ronaldsway airport.

 

Castletown Heritage is seeking permission to place a plaque at the base of one of the two remaining stone gate pillars, which were the entrance to the Royal Naval Air Station.

 

The memorial is intended to raise awareness of the military history of the area, and remember those who served at the base.

 

It’s not the only feature left from the base, with the Royal British Hall another reminder of the site’s past.

 

The bid could be complicated however by a planning application for 95 homes in the fields opposite Janet’s Corner.

 

Any preservation of the pillars could disrupt efforts to create a new access point, either with a new junction or roundabout.

 

Castletown Commissioners discussed the proposal at a meeting this week.

 

The board liked the proposal in principle, but agreed that preservation of the pillars should not be to the detriment of any future highways access requirements.
