Changes at Ballakermeen won't lead to more traffic, says DOI

Wed, 28 Aug 2019

Concerns about traffic management around Ballakermeen High School have been downplayed by the Department of Infrastructure.

Nearby residents fear new car exits planned for the school will cause an increase in the volume of traffic.

They made the claim at a meeting held last week to discuss the introduction of a one-way system at the school, and the ‘reopening’ of routes onto Westbourne Drive and Westminster Terrace.

The plans were put forward to improve the flow of traffic, and reduce the number of vehicles passing both students and staff.

Highways chiefs anticipate most vehicles will leave via the new exits between 3:30pm and 5.30pm, with school buses still leaving via St Catherine’s Drive.

The proposal is intended as a ‘follow-on’ from the introduction of an entrance barrier to slow cars arriving from Westminster Drive

The changes are also intended to encourage more students to walk and cycle to school.

It’s understood the deadline to comment on the application has been extended until 20 September, at the request of both the DoI and Douglas Council.
