The Department of Infrastructure has announced speed restrictions are set to change across the Island during a process which will see 20mph zones implemented in town centres and more residential areas.
The DOI say it is eager to reinforce the message that the interests and safety of pedestrians and cyclists are given a high priority, and the work builds on efforts to change drivers’ behaviour when they are in residential areas and community spaces.
Not all areas of towns will be designated 20mph as it is important that the road design is appropriate for the speed limit.
A public consultation will be held on the issue later this year.
Implementation of the low speed areas will take place from 2020.
