Events planned as IOM joins Dementia Awareness Week
Mon, 20 May 2019
A series of special events will take place on the Island this week to mark Dementia Awareness Week.
The entire programme has been organised by the Island’s Older Persons’ Mental Health Service, with input from the local branch of the Alzheimer’s Society.
The aims of the week are to raise understanding of dementia, explaining how it is possible to live well with the condition, and to promote the importance of early diagnosis, as better outcomes are more likely when support and medication are given at an early stage.
The special activities organised throughout the week run as follows:
-
Monday 20 May at 12pm - the Decaf train (with Manx Decaf, the dementia café charity), leaving Douglas on a run to Castletown, serving a two-course meal and coffee.
-
Tuesday 21 May 2-4 pm – drop-in afternoon tea at Noble’s hospital staff restaurant Thie Bee. Staff from Older Persons Mental Health Service will answer any questions about dementia.
-
Wednesday 22 May 2-4pm - an activity afternoon at The National Sports Centre. Activities will range from chair-based exercises to walking football. Refreshments will be available
-
Thursday 23 at 2pm – a cinema afternoon at Broadway Cinema, Villa Marina. The film will be ‘Singing in the Rain’. Tickets direct from the Villa at £4.00. The Villa is wheelchair-friendly but wheelchair seats will be limited.
-
Friday 24th from 2-4 pm – disco at the Heron public house, Anagh Coar with music from the 50s, 60s and 70s with fancy dress optional. The DJ is Dr Chris Jagus, consultant psychiatrist. All welcome!
It is estimated that more than 1,000 people are living with the condition in the Isle of Man. As many as one in three people over 65 will develop dementia.
