Moore tops the poll in Lonan by-election

Fri, 08 Feb 2019

The people of Lonan have elected a new local authority member to serve them on the board of Garff Commissioners.

Andrew Moore topped the poll in a by-election held yesterday with fifty-nine votes, just two ahead of nearest candidate Andrew Cronin.

Mr Moore, a former chair of Laxey Commissioners, says he’s relieved voters supported the candidate who ran the ‘clean campaign’.

He’s criticised what he sees as the ‘cyber-bullying’ that’s been directed toward Garff Commissioners on social media in recent months.

Returning officer Nigel Dobson announced the result last night at Laxey Working Men’s institute after the votes from both polling stations were counted.

Mr Moore will now serve until 2020, when the next local authority general elections will take place.

The newly-elected local politician thanked all those who turned out to use their vote in what were ‘miserable conditions’, and those who manned the polling stations.

Mr Moore says he’s looking forward to working with the Board and adding his experience of local government to the decision-making process

In total, 233 people turned out to cast their vote, with a turnout of 19.1 per cent for the local authority by-election.

The result was as follows:

Andrew Cronin – 57
Matthew Lamberton 44
Andrew Moore 59
David Samuels 28
Chris Steele 43

Two ballot papers were spoilt.
