Commissioners support Great Meadow development

Wed, 05 Dec 2018

Castletown Commissioners have expressed support for plans to build 130 homes at Great Meadow.

An application has been submitted for approval in principle for a major residential development in fields off of Malew Road.

The plans include sheltered housing, a care home and a community centre.

At a commissioners meeting this week, chairman Colin Leather told members ‘Castletown needs housing’ and facilities in the application reflected the ‘mixed needs’ of the community.

Commissioner Jimmy Cubbon said ‘what’s proposed will bring massive employment opportunities’.

Members voted unanimously to send a letter expressing their support for the application.

But campaigners have objected to the plan due to its impact on the heritage landscape surrounding the Golden Meadow Mill, and raised the issues of traffic and affect on infrastructure.

Including the Great Meadow application, plans in place at Knock Rushen and opposite Janet’s Corner, bring the total of new homes which could be built on Castletown near to the 270 mark.

Local Democracy Reporter Ewan Gawne asked Castletown Commissioners chairman Colin Leather if the development went some way to meeting the old capital’s housing need:
