Manx Whale and Dolphin Watch has been awarded a grant of £2,000 by the Manx Lottery Trust, for funding towards the Island’s first ever marine animal visitors centre.
The Island’s dedicated marine mammal charity, which works voluntarily all year round to ensure the safeguarding of whales, dolphins and porpoises in Manx waters, has secured a lease for a property on Michael Street, Peel, which will be known as the Whale and Dolphin Visitors Centre.
The facility, which is due to open in early 2019, will be used to raise awareness of marine mammal species seen regularly in Manx territorial waters and as a central base for the charity to continue its scientific research.
Entry will be free and visitors will find information on local species, a collection of bones and skeletons, a life size inflatable harbour porpoise, a library home to a plethora of relevant literature and scientific papers and an educational activity and craft area for children.
Manx Whale and Dolphin Watch volunteers will also use the office space daily to conduct data analysis and administrative work.
