Public Housing Should Be For Those Most In Need - Julie Edge MHK

The MHK with responsibility for Housing at the Department of Infrastructure, says her priority is making sure homes are available for those most in need.

Julie Edge won’t reveal whether rents will increase next year, but says any decision will be made after careful consideration of tenants’ ability to pay.

The Onchan member says it’s important to have a national outlook when setting policy, rather than focusing on particular local authorities.

‘Tough decisions do have to be made, and it’s my responsibility to represent everyone fairly’.

The DOI is starting its rent setting process for April 2019 and an announcement is expected in December this year.

Following discussions in Tynwald  about the introduction of means testing, Mrs Edge says any changes need to be considered carefully, as they will affect some individuals more than others.

The DOI member insists support is available for those who are struggling to pay rent, through both local authorities and government.
