Work has begun on the largest sheltered housing complex in the North, after a significant investment of £6 million by local authorities.

The planned Mayfield social housing complex will be built by Queen’s Pier Road, offering 10 two-bed and 27 one-bed apartments.

Auldyn Construction has won the contract to build the new complex – work is expected to be complete by 2020.

The project’s been funded via bank loan by the Ramsey and Northern Districts and Housing Committee following approval by the Department of Infrastructure and the Treasury.

Ratepayers won’t be asked to foot the bill, as rental income is expected to pay off the £6 million outlay.

Chair of Board Sandra Kerrison claims the Mayfield complex is very much needed as the Cooil ny Marrey complex ‘is way past its sell-by date’, and residents need to be re-homed in a suitable modern building.

Tenants will have to pay slightly higher rents though when moving into the new , larger apartments.

Mrs Kerrison says the new, low-energy build will reflect the existing character of the May Hill area, and its central location will reflect the ‘community ethos’ of sheltered housing.

She’s been speaking about the project to Local Democracy Reporter Ewan Gawne:
