The Chief Constable of the Isle of Man says he's sorry Manx police weren't able to stop abuse at a children home in the 1970s.

Gary Roberts was speaking to a Tynwald committee investigating the historic abuse that took place at Knottfield Care Home.

An investigation into the children's home resulted in a conviction, but a previous investigation in the 70s failed to result in any prosecutions.

The Chief Constable apologised for what wasn't done by police in the 70s, adding that he deeply regrets any failures by the police that prevented victims getting justice at that time.

He also apologised to the victims who felt they didn't receive the support they needed from officers.

Roberts described the matter as shameful and appallingly damaging.
