Fire crews spend seven hours at South Quay fire scene

Thu, 29 Mar 2018

The Island's Fire and Rescue Service spent almost seven hours at the scene of a substantial fire at an industrial unit in Douglas.

The incident started shortly after 2pm on South Quay yesterday, resulting in the area being closed to traffic and pedestrians for several hours.

The building contained an electrical sub station which prevented crews using large amounts of water in the initial stages of the incident.

Once Manx Utilities isolated the power the firefighters were able to bring the fire under control, eventually clearing the scene shortly after 9pm.

The fire service confirmed the incident was brought to a close without injury.

Fire crews also thanked all services that attended the incident, which included the police and coastguard, as well as the public who were affected by power outages and road closures.
