Controlled explosion carried out after WWII ordnance found in Castletown

Fri, 02 Mar 2018

A controlled explosion has taken place in the south of the Island after ordnance dating back to the Second World War was found by a member of the public.

The object was spotted near the car park at Hango Hill on Monday, and the British military confirmed the item from was the 1940s.

Castletown Coastguard kept the area safe until members of the Army Bomb Disposal Unit were able to travel to the Island and carry out the controlled explosion on Castletown beach.

It's the second such item to be found on the Island recently after a projectile was found on Ramsey beach last week.

Members of the public are urged to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard if they locate a suspicious object on the Island's coast.
