Scallop Management Board member caught breaking fishing laws

Mon, 15 Jan 2018

A member of the Island's Scallop Management Board has resigned after being caught fishing illegally.

Melvyn Reid from Ramsey appeared before magistrates after admitting breaching fishing regulations.

Reid was caught fishing for king scallops at 5.38am on November 8th south west of Douglas - a curfew prevents scallops being caught before 6am.

The court fined Reid £5,000 and ordered him to pay over £200 in costs.

The Scallop Management Board advises the Isle of Man Government on measures to protect the fishery.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture insists it will continue to prosecute those who disregard the law.
