The Department of Health and Social Care spent almost £4m more than expected in the first six months of the current financial year.
The Department's estimated costs for April to September were £100.5m, but the actual spending was just over £104.3m.
The DHSC has been undertaking a range of cost-saving measures after having to seek an additional £11.1m in funding last year, including stopping recruitment of non-essential roles and ending its funding of Meals on Wheels.
The Department's total budget for the current financial year is just under £264m.
