Burglary review calls for improvements

Wed, 18 Oct 2017

A review of the Isle of Man Constabulary's response to a series of burglaries in 2015 found the police struggled to cope with the level of information from the public.

The Lancashire Constabulary were called in for a peer review after more than 50 properties were targeted between January and March 2015, resulting in cash and jewelry being taken.

A report into the Manx force's response to the incidents found the investigation team had a lack of clear intelligence and struggled to prioritised resources because of the amount of information received.

The Lancashire police also found there was a lack of media strategy, which detracted from the investigation and resulted in public confidence in the Constabulary suffering.

Despite some concerns, the review described the overall response by uniformed officers as excellent.

The report made a number of recommendations including identify an investigative structure and ensuring the senior management team delivers media strategy.

The findings of the review were released in response to a Freedom of Information request, which also confirmed many of the recommendations have since been brought in.
