Nine incidents of trams losing control of suffering brake failures have been reported over the last five years.
The Department of Infrastructure has been notified of three incidents on the Manx Electric Railway since the start of 2013, and six on the Snaefell Mountain Railway.
No incidents have occurred on the MER since 2014, but half of those on the mountain trams have come since last year.
The Snaefell service was briefly suspended earlier this month after the brakes failed on a tram coming down the mountain.
The Department has been working with the Health and Safety at Work Inspectorate to investigate the latest incident.
