DEFA seeks feedback on marine nature reserve plans

Sat, 24 Jun 2017

The Government is asking for feedback on plans to make 10 inshore areas designated marine nature reserves.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture says the areas already have restrictions or closures for fishing, dredging and other activities.

DEFA believes formally designating the sites as marine nature reserves would help protect important species as well as helping the Island meet biological diversity targets.

The proposals wouldn't increase the number of protected areas, but would add greater restrictions to areas that already have closures or restrictions.

The sites include the Langness Conservation Zone, Laxey Fisheries and Douglas Fisheries Closed Area.

Full details on the consultation can be found on the Government's website.
