Drivers who don't renew their car tax could have their vehicle removed under proposed changes by the Department of Infrastructure.

Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer revealed in this week's sitting of the House of Keys that an amendment to the Road Traffic Legislation Bill will allow for the removal of vehicles not displaying a valid tax disc.

Motorists who have their cars seized under the proposed new rules would have to pay the outstanding duty or fixed penalties before they could get their car back.

120 abandoned vehicles were removed by the DoI last year, as well as nine by local authorities.

New proposed changes would also allow the removal of vehicles that haven't been abandoned, but are neglected to the extent they cause offence.
