The Department of Infrastructure says new software controlling the level crossing in Ballasalla will save road users more than a minute.
The new system releases the barriers as soon as the steam train has passed, cutting around 60 to 70 seconds waiting each time the train goes past.
The previous set-up only saw the barriers raised once the train had travelled a certain distance beyond the crossing.
The new software was installed overnight earlier this week to minimise disruption, and will be installed at level crossings around the Island.
