Treasury Minister confirms sugar tax for soft drinks

Thu, 23 Feb 2017

Sugary soft drinks are likely to be more expensive from next year as the Government has confirmed plans to introduce a sugar tax.

Treasury Minister Alfred Cannan revealed the Island will follow the UK's lead by bringing in a Soft Drinks Industry Levy from 2018.

The idea had previously been discussed in Tynwald, and Mr Cannan confirmed the tax will come in as part of this year's budget.

It's hoped the tax will help the Government's Healthy Weight Strategy while also encouraging the Manx public to consume less sugar.
