Public consultation reveals support for ferry passenger ID

Mon, 23 Jan 2017

A public consultation has revealed strong support for the introduction of ID checks on passengers travelling to and from the Island by sea.

Ferry passengers are currently not required to undergo border identity checks to travel through the Island's sea ports.

The Department of Home Affairs received almost 1,100 responses to the consultation, with the majority in favour of ID checks.

The questionnaire focussed on whether changes would help detect criminal activity such as drug smuggling and money laundering.

However, some raised concerns that making ferry passengers show ID could be an inconvenience to those travelling and have an impact on the local economy.
