Drug dealers could face longer sentences for selling near educational facilities

Drug dealers who sell psychoactive substances near college or university premises on the Island could face harsher punishment in the future.

Treasury Minister Alfred Cannan will ask Tynwald to approve a series of amendmends to laws covering such substances to target those who sell to students.

The Psychoactive Substances Act already lists selling such drugs near schools at the start or end of the school day as an aggravating factor, but the Treasury wants to extend the legislation to include those caught dealing near higher education sites.

The changes would include university, college and all other educational facilities on the Island an hour before the start of classes and for an hour after classes finish.
