The Isle of Man Government can decide the future of the Island's sea services following a vote at this month's sitting of Tynwald.
The Manx parliament voted to accept two reports into the ferry provision which will be considered as part of the Strategic Sea Services Policy.
The suggestions in the reports included putting the ferry services out to tender, a state buyout and franchising.
The Steam Packet Company's agreement with the Manx Government to provide passenger services is due to come to an end in 2020.
