UK committee want to keep Common Travel Area

Tue, 13 Dec 2016

The UK's House of Lords European Union Committee wants to maintain the Common Travel Area between the UK, Ireland and the British Crown Dependencies, including the Isle of Man.

The latest report from the committee says bringing in restrictions on movement between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland border would negatively impact on the Irish economy.

The UK wants to ensure residents from Ireland still have the right to live and work in the UK, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands and vice versa.

The arrangement will have to be agreed with the European Union, of which the Republic of Ireland will still be a member state after the UK's withdrawal.

The body also wants the EU to agree to allow Britain and Ireland to have a customs and trade agreement if the UK leaves the customs union.
