Public sector rents will go up by 2% from the start of April next year.
The Department of Infrastructure will put charges up, costing residents an extra £1.10 to £1.87 per week.
The Department says the cost in maintenance and refurbishing properties is more than the income from rent, and a lower rise in rental costs would result in a bigger budget shortfall.
This year, the DoI has put £4.1m into providing public sector housing.
Those who have their rent covered as part of income-assessed benefits won't be affected by the changes.
