Horse tram passengers up 40% in 2016

The number of people using the Douglas Bay horse trams jumped by over 40% this summer, according to the Department of Infrastructure.

Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer revealed that 69,542 people travelled on the service in 2016, compared with just under 49,000 the previous year.

It was the first season the Government has operated the horse trams following Douglas Borough Council's decision to end the service.

As a result, revenue from the trams increased by over £25,000, although the Department is still expecting to record a £60,000 loss.

Mr Harmer also confirmed the Douglas Bay trams will continue to be operated by his Department for the next two years, with the aim to secure the long-term future of the service.

The figures were revealed following a question from Garff MHK Daphne Caine at this month's sitting of Tynwald.
